About this price
Gold is the most widely followed precious metal, held by central banks, investors and jewellers. Its price is quoted in US dollars per troy ounce (31.1035 grams). This page tracks the long-run history of the gold price using World Bank monthly averages from January 1960, with per-gram and per-kilogram values and conversion into ten currencies.
Until August 1971 the US dollar was convertible into gold at an official price of $35 per ounce under the Bretton Woods system, which is why the first decade of the chart is almost flat. After convertibility ended, gold traded freely and became far more volatile, with long bull and bear markets.
Data notes
World Bank Pink Sheet monthly averages. From June 2025 the World Bank uses the spot average of daily rates; earlier values are averages of the London afternoon fixing. Monthly averages smooth out daily extremes, so the all-time high shown here is the highest monthly average, not the highest daily price. A daily gold price is not available from a free source that permits commercial display.
