About this price
WTI (West Texas Intermediate) is the main US crude oil benchmark. This page shows the EIA daily spot price for WTI at Cushing, Oklahoma (free on board), in US dollars per barrel, from January 1986. It is a physical spot assessment, not the NYMEX futures price, and EIA publishes it once a week (normally on Wednesdays).
Oil prices respond to OPEC+ supply decisions, US shale output, global demand, inventories and geopolitical events. The history below shows how violent those swings can be, from the 2008 peak to the brief negative price in April 2020.
Data notes
EIA daily spot prices (public domain; EIA notes they are sourced from Thomson Reuters/LSEG). Litre and US-gallon values are exact conversions (1 barrel = 42 US gallons = 158.987 litres). The World Bank also publishes a monthly WTI average, which we store as a secondary series.
